A complete trail kit starts with a breathable jersey and shorts worn over a liner, full-finger gloves, and shoes matched to your pedals. Add knee guards for technical terrain and a packable jacket for weather, and always wear a helmet.
MTB gear is built for durability, mobility, and protection rather than aerodynamics. Expect tougher abrasion-resistant fabrics, looser fits that allow body English, a shell-and-liner short system, pad compatibility, and full-finger gloves, where road kit leans toward tight aero fits and rear-pocket storage.
As a rough guide: above 75°F, a lightweight short-sleeve jersey and shorts; 60 to 75°F, add a packable wind layer for descents; 45 to 60°F, a thermal jersey with a wind jacket; below 45°F, a base layer under a thermal jersey, an insulated or waterproof shell, and trail pants. Dress for the coldest part of the ride and shed layers as you warm up.
Knee guards are strongly recommended for technical trails, bike parks, and downhill, and many trail riders wear lightweight ones routinely because knees are a common point of contact in a fall. Match the coverage to your terrain; see the protection collection for options.
Flats are forgiving and great for learning, playful riding, and quick dabs; clipless pedals add efficiency and control for climbing and long rides. Choose your shoes to match the pedals you ride, since clipless and flat shoes use different soles.
Across most categories you'll see these tiers. Canyon is the versatile everyday trail line, Elevate adds trail and enduro features, and Summit and Summit PRO are the most technical, premium pieces for aggressive riding. Picking a line in one category gives you a good sense of the fit and intent across the rest of your kit.
