Wind shells, built on the Barrier platform, cut chill on cool, dry days and exposed ridgelines and pack down small. Waterproof shells, marked WxB, add seam-sealed protection for sustained rain, mud, and wheel spray. If you mostly ride dry, a wind layer is enough; if you ride through storms, choose waterproof and vent on the climbs.
They describe how the waterproof fabric is built. 2.5L construction is lighter and more packable for occasional rain, while 3L is more durable and breathable for sustained wet and harder use. Both use seam-sealed, breathable membranes to keep rain out while letting sweat escape.
Trail jackets are cut a touch roomier so they layer cleanly over a jersey and soft pads, with articulated sleeves that track your reach and a drop tail that seals out spray. Check the fit in the attack position, and use our Size & Fit Guide if you're between sizes.
Some do, sized to fit over or under a trail helmet. Over-helmet hoods seal best in storms, while under-helmet or low-profile hoods stay quieter at speed. Choose based on how often you ride in sustained rain.
Insulated jackets and vests add low-bulk warmth for freezing starts, shuttle laps, and lift-served days. Layer one over a wicking base and a jersey; a vest keeps your core warm while still dumping heat on the climbs.
Close all zips, wash cold on a gentle cycle, and skip fabric softener, which clogs the membrane and the water-repellent finish. If the care label allows, a low tumble-dry or warm iron through a cloth helps reactivate the DWR so water beads up again.
